Abstract:

The development of lowlands and small floodplains helps increase agricultural production and strengthen the resilience of family farms in West Africa. The economic opportunities offered by these areas can be seized by stakeholders with access to a plot of land in their respective locality. In rice cultivation, the agronomic impact of developments results from changes in the water regime and changes in technical itineraries. This study aims to assess the impact of hydroagricultural development on agricultural production in the Yarafè lowland, located in the Urban Commune of Faranah. The survey was conducted among groups of rice farmers, the National Rural Promotion Service, the agricultural council, and local authorities in the Yara sector. The study involved 171 randomly selected stakeholders. Crop yields before and after hydro-agricultural development, rice varieties cultivated, cultivation techniques used, number of producers, types of fertilization as well as fertilization methods were evaluated. GPSMAP 64s (Garmin), Microsoft Office 2021 (Word and Excel), Kobocollect, QGIS 3.12, and SPSS Statistics 21, were used to process the collected data. The survey results show that local varieties are the most cultivated in the lowland (91%), while improved varieties are the least cultivated (9%). The fertilizers most used by rice farmers in the lowland are mineral fertilizers (69%), on the other hand, 29% of rice farmers do not use any fertilizer, while only 1% rice farmers use organic fertilizers, and 1% combine organic and mineral fertilizers. The development increased yield by 0.4 t/ha compared to the undeveloped area.
